Could you briefly tell us a bit about Thulcandra for those who may not be familiar with the band?

Thulcandra was founded in 2003 by Steffen Kummerer & Juergen Zintz to write material in the vein of the early 90ies black and death metal scene. For example Unanimated, Dissection, Sacramentum & Eucharist where huge influences at that time. After a first demo recording Juergen committed suicide and the band was on held for a few years and I focused on my main band, Obscura. Within the year 2008 Sebastian & Tobias Ludwig joined the band and we recruited Seraph (Dark Fortress) as drummer to finally record our debut album which was released in 2010 via Napalm Records. After a full European tour we entered the Woodshed Studios (Obscura, Tryptikon, Pestilence) and tracked the second effort, "Under A Frozen Sun". The band is not a side project, we are a full time group that already did a whole European tour and is playing regulary on selected festivals and single shows.

You’ve just released your new album Under a Frozen Sun. What has the reaction from fans been like so far?

The feedback for our new  album was overwhelming and not expected. There is a reason why almost no other band play in this style nowadays anymore. So I expected only a few old school maniacs would be interested in this release. Anyhow, we got many positive reviews and also live offers as well as a bunch of mails where people mentioned they where looking for ages for a new band that hold the flame of old school death black metal the Swedish way. I am glad to hear that, and the fact people are interested in Thulcandra pushed us immense to write a new album.

How would you describe the new album’s sound?

Old school Swedish Black Death Metal.

Do you think you will always stick strictly to the black/death metal sound, or would you like to experiment with different metal genres?

We started this band as a black death metal group that sticks to the early 90ies and we will keep on this idea. There is no reason why we should change our style.

You are currently signed to Napalm Records. How did that come about?

The old school classic way; producing a preprodution of the debut album and sending it around. In the very end a friend of us sent it to Napalm Records and recommened it, so we got an offer we choose.

Do you have any upcoming plans to tour the UK?

We toured the UK with nine dates this year already and and we hope to tour again in 2012.

Are there any places/festivals that you haven’t yet played that you would like to play in the future?

We played three festivals so far, so I would say we would like to play every where. Especially the Party.San Festival, Hell's Pleasure & Inferno Festival would be a great experience to perform.

What are your plans for 2012?

We will release our first demo sessions with a few bonus tracks and set up a small tour besides some exclusive festival appearances.

Finally, what advice would you give to young metal bands starting out?

Don't record a demo after two weeks of playing guitar. Recruit a real lineup and write songs together, releases with drum computers are awkward and not necessary on this planet. Just write what you feel and exchange the ideas with the band and work together on compositions.
