After waiting outside of tonight’s venue – Nottingham’s Rock City – with Midlands Rocks’ photographer Carla Mundy and watching the crowd queue and paint their faces with neon face paint, Clair met up with Kids In Glass Houses' tour manager who wound them both through the maze backstage of Rock City to sit down with Kids In Glass Houses’ guitarist Joel Fisher.
(Read MR's review of the gig here) Clair: So you guys have a new album out, 'In Gold Blood'. What response has it received on tour? Joel: It’s been pretty good, I mean, it’s different from what we've done before, so we were a bit apprehensive to what it would actually be but we've taken it on the road now for the past two weeks, and that’s the only place where you can get a real reaction, but it’s been really positive and everyone’s been singing along. Clair: So you've been playing it on tour? Joel: Yeah, not in full, but a lot of it. Clair: You have a new single released on October 23rd, 'Not in this world'. What was recording the video like? Joel: Erm, I don’t really enjoy videos, apart from the first hour but then they get really boring and drag on, doing the same thing over and over again but in this video we managed to drive some jeeps around, so that made up for the rest of it, but it was like a 2 day shoot so it was even worse ‘cos we usually do it in one day, so it kinda dragged for a while but it was worth it cos we were pleased with the results. Clair: Tonight is the last night on tour. Have you got any tour stories? Joel: Erm, nothing bad, nothing I could dish the dirt on. It’s just been a really good tour. Clair: What was the highs/lows? Joel: Of this tour? It’s all been a high. It’s not been a bad show. It’s only been like nine dates anyway, but the only low is going home tomorrow. Clair: What is one item you can’t live without on tour? Carla: You cant say guitar! Joel: You gotta go with your toothbrush then! Clair: How are you going to celebrate the end of the tour? Joel: I think we're planning on having a bit of a party tonight, gonna be sticking around till four, so if you want any tour stories, you should stick around, and document! Carla: I’ve got my camera, sooo…
Clair: What do you guys do on your days off? Joel: On tour you mean? Not a lot, we just hang around, went to the cinema yesterday and saw a few films, eat, generally. Carla: What did you see? Joel: ‘Inbetweeners’ ‘cos I haven’t seen that before, and then we saw ‘Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark’, which was er… rubbish! I don’t recommend it. Clair: Do you get to explore the cities? Joel: Yeah, but we've been to most of the cities we've played, so we've been there so many times there’s that there’s nothing any seen new for us to see. It’s exciting the first time round but the second or fifth or sixth time round it gets a bit boring. Clair: What’s your favourite song to play live? Joel: Erm, at the moment its ‘Animals’ ‘cos we have this part of the set where we switch all the lights off and it’s all UV paint, so that’s the funniest. Clair: There’s quite a few kids lined up outside covered in neon paint already. Carla: is it on the set list? Joel: Yes yes yes, definitely!
Clair: What’s next after the tour? Joel: We're going to Germany for two weeks or so with Zebrahead next month, which will be fun. We toured with them ages ago. Clair: Are you excited? Joel: Yeah, it’s gonna be all the small towns we've never been to as well, so the first time we go there we can explore! Clair: How would you survive a zombie apocalypse? Joel: Er...like my weapon of choice? Carla: General zombie plans. We’ve had some hilarious ones… Clair: Yeah, it’s our reoccurring question. Twin Atlantic did not like my plan! (You can read it here) [Claire and Carla proceed to tell him our zombie plans, but unfortunately Joel wasn’t impressed either and came up with his own.] Joel: I’ll probably get a swat van and run them over...
